Altra Lone Peak 9 Women’s is first: wide toe, zero-drop, the shoe most women on the PCT actually start in. HOKA Speedgoat 7 Women’s is Best Value — more cushion, easy to find at REI. Altra Olympus 7 Women’s is Max Cushion when the Speedgoat is not enough foam.
Trail runners replaced boots on the long trail. That is what published PCT lists actually name. You will buy two or three pairs. This ranking is which pair you start in.
Altra Lone Peak is first: zero-drop, wide toe, the most-common trail runner in the 2025 survey. HOKA Speedgoat is Best Value on cushion — Vibram Megagrip, a co-op staple. Altra Olympus is Max Cushion: more foam, still an Altra fit. Socks from the sock ranking will do more for blisters than any of these outsoles.
