Rain Pants

Men’s and unisex picks first. Women’s picks on the same page.

Waterproof pants you pull on over shorts. About half a PCT class carries a pair.

Three picks. That is the whole list. If it is not here, it did not earn a place.

Why these three rain pants

Halfway Anywhere’s 2026 PCT gear guide records that 53.6% of hikers carried rain pants. That page does not publish a three-model pants table the way it does for traction. These three are named in independent tests we read: CleverHiker on Versalite, Helium, and Trailmade; Treeline Review on the Helium UL; Adventure Alan on ultralight rain pants.

Montbell Versalite is the lightest pair in that set. Outdoor Research Helium UL is the more durable ultralight with ankle zips. REI Co-op Trailmade is the co-op value pair CleverHiker names as a budget rain pant. Patagonia Torrentshell 3L is the pants model Halfway Anywhere names in passing; it is not this three. Frogg Toggs on that survey is the rain suit, not a pants ranking.

Is this gear for you?

Montbell Versalite Pants

What it is

Minimalist UL rain pant: taped seams, drawcord waist, Samue ankle cinch, no zippers/pockets. CleverHiker 4.5/5, men’s 3.2 oz / women’s 2.9 oz. Card $189. Fragile 10D class fabric — pack shell, not brush armor.

Where it fits

Thru and summer UL hikers who want the lightest shell pant and will baby 10D fabric. No ankle zip — shoes off on many fits. Not a 3L alpine pant.

Why it's on the top three

Best Overall rain pant for pure UL weight: CleverHiker’s minimalist favorite ahead of Helium’s zip Premium and Trailmade’s budget co-op value.

Is this gear for you?

Outdoor Research Helium UL Rain Pants

What it is

UL rain pant with ankle zippers and packable pocket; Pertex Shield / Helium UL fabric family on current builds. CleverHiker and Treeline Review both test the pair. Card 5.8 oz / $140 — heavier than Versalite, easier over shoes.

Where it fits

Hikers who want UL rain pants but need ankle zips to pull on over trail runners. Strong breathability for the weight; still not a brush-belt or deep-winter pant.

Why it's on the top three

Premium Pick for zip convenience and named dual-test floor, between Versalite’s ounce-winning Best Overall and Trailmade’s $70 value.

For more information, go straight to the source. Click GEAR UP for the product page.

Is this gear for you?

REI Co-op Trailmade Rain Pants

What it is

Co-op rain pant CleverHiker rates 4.4/5 at $70, men’s about 9.5 oz. Ankle zips (shorter than full-side zips). Heavier and less breathable than Versalite/Helium; easy to replace at a co-op.

Where it fits

Price-first hikers and anyone who wants a try-on co-op pant. Fine for standard trail rain; not the UL ounce king.

Why it's on the top three

Best Value: CleverHiker’s named budget rain pant at $70, completing the three with Versalite Best Overall and Helium Premium.

For more information, go straight to the source. Click GEAR UP for the product page.

Is this gear for you?

Montbell Versalite Pants

What it is

Same Versalite fabric system as the men’s pair in a real women’s cut. CleverHiker lists women’s 2.9 oz (men’s 3.2 oz) and rates the line 4.5/5. Card $175. Women’s maker page exists (model class 2328233).

Where it fits

Women’s UL pack shell for summer thru and section rain — not all-day brush pants. No ankle zip; fragile 10D class.

Why it's on the top three

Best Overall women’s rain pants: CleverHiker’s UL favorite with a true women’s SKU, mirrored from the men’s Best Overall.

For more information, go straight to the source. Click GEAR UP for the product page.

Is this gear for you?

Outdoor Research Helium UL Rain Pants

What it is

Real women’s Helium UL SKU at OR/co-op class shelves. CleverHiker and Treeline test Helium rain pants (men’s/women’s). Card ~5.8 oz / $140.

Where it fits

Women who want UL rain pants with ankle zips over trail runners — same role as the men’s Helium Premium Pick.

Why it's on the top three

Premium Pick on the women’s rain-pants three: named tests + real women’s SKU between Versalite Best Overall and Trailmade Best Value.

For more information, go straight to the source. Click GEAR UP for the product page.

Is this gear for you?

REI Co-op Trailmade Rain Pants

What it is

Women’s Trailmade SKU on the same CleverHiker rain-pants test as the men’s pair (4.4/5, $70). Card 9.2 oz. Real women’s cut, not a men’s size.

Where it fits

Budget women’s rain pant you can try and replace at a co-op. Heavier than Versalite/Helium; fine for standard trail rain.

Why it's on the top three

Best Value women’s rain pants: same CleverHiker budget pick as the men’s row with a real women’s SKU.
