Camp Chairs & Sit Pads

Only the best. Nothing else makes the list.

A one-pound chair if luxury is worth it, or a two-ounce foam pad if it is not.

Three picks. That is the whole list. If it is not here, it did not earn a place.

Why these three seats

A chair is luxury. A sit pad is hygiene for your insulation — sitting on snow or wet ground wrecks a puffy and a pad. Most thru-hikers take the foam. Some take the chair for zero days.

Helinox Chair Zero is first: about 17.6 ounces, the chair backpackers mean. REI Flexlite Air is Best Value — about a pound, less money, a slightly narrower seat. Therm-a-Rest Z Seat is Trail Tough: two ounces of accordion foam. If you are counting grams, take the Z Seat.

Helinox Chair Zero

What it is

Ultralight DAC-frame camp chair. Card: about 17.6 oz, ~$150. Ripstop seat on a pole frame; packs toward water-bottle size.

  • Helinox — Chair Zero product line (UL framed chair)
  • CleverHiker — Chair Zero review (comfort/stability vs lighter rivals; Best backpacking chairs class)
  • GearJunkie — best backpacking chairs roundup (Helinox Zero / Zero LT class vs Flexlite Air)
  • OutdoorGearLab — best backpacking chair guide (Chair Zero as UL luxury balance)

Where it fits

Framed sit for backpackers who will carry ~1 lb for a real backrest. Not a thru default — most long trails sit on foam, rocks, or nothing. Narrower comfort tradeoffs than heavier Helinox Chair One.

  • CleverHiker — packs into side bottle pocket class; premium price called out
  • GearJunkie — framed UL chairs vs sit pads (Z Seat as gram compromise)
  • OutdoorGearLab — Zero more stable/comfortable than lightest framed peers

Why it's on the top three

Best Overall on the camp-seats three: the UL framed chair independent chair guides keep naming when the list wants a real chair, not a pad.

  • Named tests — CleverHiker Chair Zero · GearJunkie backpacking chairs · OGL backpacking chairs
  • Maker — Helinox Chair Zero
  • Survey class — HA PCT does not survey camp chairs; this ranking is chair/sit-pad class, not a thru carry census

Is this gear for you?

REI Co-op Flexlite Air

What it is

REI’s framed UL chair. Card: about 16 oz, $100. Same job as Chair Zero: off-ground seat with a backrest, slightly cheaper and often a touch lighter.

  • REI — Flexlite Air Chair listing (weight/price class)
  • CleverHiker — Flexlite Air as cheaper/lighter Chair Zero rival in Chair Zero review
  • GearJunkie — Flexlite Air as spend-wise framed option; stability tradeoffs vs Helinox
  • OutdoorGearLab — Flexlite Air among lightest tent-style framed chairs (~16 oz class)

Where it fits

Value framed chair when Chair Zero’s price is the blocker. Independent comparisons often call it tippier / less comfortable seat angle than Zero. Still a chair — not a sit pad.

  • CleverHiker — ~2 oz lighter / ~$40 less than Zero class in their notes
  • GearJunkie — budget framed alternative with stability penalty
  • OutdoorGearLab — Flexlite Air in lightest framed-chair cluster

Why it's on the top three

Best Value on the camp-seats three: co-op shelf, lower street price, same framed-sit category as the Helinox.

  • Named tests — CleverHiker · GearJunkie · OGL backpacking chairs
  • REI — Flexlite Air listing
  • Survey class — HA PCT does not survey camp chairs

Is this gear for you?

Therm-a-Rest Z Seat

What it is

Folding closed-cell foam sit pad. Card: about 2 oz, ~$30. A dry spot on the ground — not a framed chair.

  • Therm-a-Rest — Z Seat product page (accordion foam sit pad)
  • OutdoorGearLab — Z Seat as minimal ground seat (not a chair with backrest)
  • GearJunkie — Z Seat as lightest “chair” compromise for gram-counters
  • REI Expert Advice / card sources — sit-pad class vs framed UL chairs

Where it fits

Thru-honest sit weight. Keeps shorts dry and hips off cold ground. No back support. Most thru classes skip framed chairs; a Z Seat is the sit option that still fits base-weight thinking.

  • OutdoorGearLab — pad-on-ground class when framed chairs are too heavy
  • GearJunkie — trimmed-toothbrush sit option vs Flexlite/Helinox
  • HA 2026 PCT — camp chairs not surveyed; foam sit gear remains a minority luxury vs sleep pads

Why it's on the top three

Trail Tough on the camp-seats three: the honest two-ounce sit pad when the other two are framed chairs.

  • Named tests — OGL backpacking chairs · GearJunkie backpacking chairs
  • Maker — Therm-a-Rest Z Seat
  • Survey class — HA PCT sleep-pad/foam culture; chairs not a survey column
