Thru Picks rankings are our own composites — not reprints of another outlet’s scores or charts. Last updated August 30, 2026. We read published thru-hiker surveys and independent tests to choose the three products on a list. Listed prices and customer ratings on the card stay live. Rank order is independent of commissions.

Independence

Rankings are Thru Picks composites. The shortlist of three is editorial — we decide who can appear. Rank order among those three uses merchant ratings and relative street price using the weights below. Listed prices and shop stars on the card stay live. Commission rates do not enter the score. Other outlets’ scores are an input we read — they are not simply reprinted onto the card as “their” rank, and we do not copy their charts or review text.

How a ranking is built

Each category page is a shortlist of three. Live shop listings keep street price and star ratings current on each card. Commission rates do not enter the score.

The composite, out of 10, is:

  • 40% published long-trail hiker surveys (carry rate and satisfaction — Halfway Anywhere PCT 2025, 790 hikers, and similar trail surveys)
  • 30% independent tests we actually read (OutdoorGearLab, Treeline Review, CleverHiker, and others cited on the card — as an input, not a copied ranking)
  • 15% merchant star ratings when a shop publishes them
  • 15% relative street price versus the other two picks in that category

Badges such as Best Overall are assigned on this site. They are not OutdoorGearLab, Wirecutter, or REI awards. Rankings are independent composites, not paid placements. Affiliate disclosure.

How to read a card

The large number is the Thru Picks score. The sentence under it is why this pick is on the list. Citations under the score are the publications we read for that product — not a claim that those outlets ranked it the same way. Weight is packed trail weight as we label it on the list. GEAR UP opens a current merchant product page. “Also at” is a second shop when one exists.

Women’s rows sit on the same category page when a real women’s cut exists (packs, shoes, layers). The jump links at the top of those pages go to the women’s row. Old URLs such as /backpacks-womens redirect there.

Update cadence

The date on every ranking and kit page — currently August 30, 2026 — is when the shortlist of three was last reviewed. Who can appear on a list changes when a major survey drops, a product is discontinued, or a pick no longer belongs among the best. Prices and customer ratings on the card itself stay live (cached about five minutes).

Listed prices and shop stars, when shown, are fetched from public merchant product pages and cached. They can change without notice. If a shop page is not available, the card shows a typical street figure from our catalog. GEAR UP always opens the live merchant page so you can confirm price and stock before you buy.

Survey data

Qualitative standings printed on a card (for example “most common quilt”) and a handful of percentages come from Halfway Anywhere’s annual PCT Hiker Survey (Class of 2025, 790 hikers) and PCT Gear Guide. Those surveys belong to Halfway Anywhere. Facts such as a published percentage are not copyrightable; the articles, tables, and photos around them are. We summarize a few figures and link. We do not host their dataset or reproduce their charts.

Popularity weights inside the Thru Picks score are editorial. Only a figure printed on a card as a percentage or “most common / highest rated” is taken from a cited survey page.

Live prices and shop ratings

Prices and star ratings labeled as listed prices are read from publicly posted merchant product pages (schema.org markup and storefront product JSON). They are the merchant’s posted figures at fetch time, not a Thru Picks lab test. Availability is not guaranteed. We store price, rating, and URL — not review text.

Where GEAR UP goes

Buy buttons are a separate layer. Listed prices and shop ratings stay live. GEAR UP opens a product page at a merchant that stocks the item — typically Garage Grown Gear, REI, or Amazon. A second “Also at” link appears when another shop also has a product page. Manufacturer sites are used only when no retailer lists the item. We may earn different commission rates from different merchants. That never moves #1, #2, or #3.
