Patagonia Torrentshell 3L Women’s is first: three-layer fabric you can hike in through a full storm. Montbell Versalite Women’s is the Premium Pick — much lighter, thinner fabric. Outdoor Research Helium Women’s is Best Value as the packable spare you can replace in town.
Rain on a long trail is either a three-layer jacket you can hike in, or a very light shell you hope you rarely need. Thru-hikers still carry one of these three cuts.
