On the Appalachian Trail, the Conservancy counts a thru as the whole trail in twelve months or less. That clock is ATC-only. Other trails set their own. A section hike is the same trail on a longer clock. Both are complete. One of them fits more lives.
ATC — thru-hike is 12 months or less (ATC-only clock) →- Why sections win. Work, family, money, and snow years. You pick the season the stretch actually wants. You do not have to eat a bad Sierra year just because your permit said April.
- How to choose the next stretch. Match water, elevation, and your current fitness. Do not start a high, cold section as your first week back. Official association pages and recent comments from hikers ahead of you beat a blog from 2019.
- Gear changes between sections. Desert water. High-elevation insulation. Rocky AT shoes. The pack that was perfect in Oregon may be wrong in Pennsylvania. Re-rank the kit for the stretch, not for your identity as a hiker.
