Body & Mind

Mental resilience and hiking your own hike

Pace, hygiene, Leave No Trace, and the quieter work of finishing.

“Hike your own hike” is not a slogan to end an argument. It is how you keep a body and a calendar that are yours.

76.8% of first-time PCT hikers in 2025 started alone. Most did not stay alone. Starting solo is normal. Matching someone else’s miles is optional.

  • Tramilies are weather. They form, they split, they are not a contract. If the pace is wrong, say so early. Leaving a group is not a moral event.
  • Town is not rest if it is a second job. The 2025 PCT class was surprised by town stress — laundry, resupply, charging, hitches. Build a town list. Do the list. Leave.
  • Boredom is a real quit reason. It showed up in both PCT and CDT surveys. The cure is rarely more miles. It is often a shorter day, a swim, or a section you actually wanted to see.
  • You can get off and still be a hiker. Injury, family, money, and joy running out are all legitimate. The trail does not issue status. Finishing a section you can be proud of beats forcing a thru you resent.
