Gear in Practice

How gear actually performs after hundreds of miles

What first-timers overpack, what actually lasts, and the small repairs that keep a kit on trail.

New gear is a catalog photo. Trail gear is a used tool. Rankings on this site start from what hikers kept, not from what looked good on day one.

  • Shoes are consumable. 4.81 pairs on the 2025 PCT. Plan replacements, not loyalty. When the foam dies, the joints pay.
  • Filters slow down. Silt and neglect, not mystery. Backflush. If flow does not return, replace it. Do not wait for the desert.
  • DCF and silnylon both age. Pinholes, stretched pitch, a zipper that was fine in the store. A bit of tape and a real pitch matter more than the fabric argument on a forum.
  • Quilts lose loft where you compress them. Stuff sacks, wet nights, and a hundred days. Dry it in sun when you can. A 20° quilt that has been stuffed wet is no longer a 20° quilt.
  • Packs tell on you. Hipbelt slack after weight loss. A frame that no longer matches. If the pack feels wrong at mile 400, check fit before you buy a new identity.
