Camp is a sequence, not a mood. The hikers who look relaxed at dusk already did the same jobs in the same order a hundred nights running.
- Pick the site first: durable surface, water and weather in mind, legal distance from water and trail.
- Shelter up before you cook. Weather does not wait for dinner.
- Sleep system in. Pad flat, quilt lofting, dry clothes in the bag so they are warm when you need them.
- Water and food next. Filter what you need for night and morning. Store food away from sleep.
- Cook, eat, clean. Sleep, cook, and store food apart. Pack the kitchen so breakfast is a reach, not a search.
- Feet. Tape, dry socks, any hot spot you ignored after lunch.
In the morning, reverse it. Eat, pack the sleep system, drop the shelter last if the weather is kind. Wet gear goes on the outside or under a strap so it can dry on the walk.
