Appalachian Trail

AT, PCT, and CDT as they actually hike — plus why section hiking is often the smarter plan.

The AT is the most social of the Triple Crown and the most physically repetitive. You are rarely far from a road, a shelter, or another hiker. You are also rarely on flat ground.

  • Length. Official 2026 length: 2,197.9 miles. It changes. Trust the ATC number, not a round 2,200.
  • Completion. ATC 2025 NOBO reported completion: 25%. That is the Conservancy’s reported figure, not a survey of finishers.
  • What it asks. Knees, rain, and a willingness to climb the same kind of mountain a thousand times. Water is usually closer than on the PCT — until it is not. The 2025 ATC survey: 19.86% wished they had planned water better; 7.13% wished they knew how to poop in the woods.
  • Support. Shelters, hostels, and a dense trail community. That support is a gift. It is also how illness and pace pressure travel.
